About

Blue Pigeon Productions creates high quality wildlife programming for international broadcast. MD, Phil Coles has been working in wildlife filmmaking for almost 30 years – developing, researching, producing and directing projects all over the world. For the past few years, Phil’s bread and butter has been a high volume returning natural history series for a German broadcaster which currently provides work for around ten people. Phil is keen to expand BPP (and its archive library), not only to create more jobs locally but also to enable him to focus on more high budget passion projects and deliver conservation messages that are close to his heart.

Why we applied to Creative East

When you’re so busy creating, the day to day needs of running, organising and expanding a business often (always!) fall to the bottom of the ‘to-do’ list. We are therefore very excited to learn from the experience of others and to reap the benefit and wisdom of more business minded people during the seminars. We would also really like to learn about funding options as Phil has many ideas to expand the work he undertakes but all of that require cold hard cash! Lastly, the thought of being more plugged in with other creatives in the region can only be a good thing and we are super excited about meeting everyone and getting stuck in.

Why we applied to Creative East

We started in 2014 and organically grew the company to its current state without any external investment and managed entirely by its founders. Operations are running smoothly and we feel the business is ready for its next growth stage. To enable this, we feel that bringing in fresh management talent and investment is necessary so when we came across this opportunity we knew we had to be part of it.

About

DragonLight Films is an award winning independent film production company based in Cambridge who specialise in producing documentary and commercial films. We collaborate directly with clients in the science, tech and education sectors to produce branded strategic video content designed to get a business result.

Why we applied to Creative East

The business has been steadily growing for about 10 years with a small team but has now hit a plateau. We are currently stuck in a dichotomy of chasing short-term commercial film work whilst developing and pitching for long-term creative & important social impact film projects, many of which are not getting ample time to be developed to their full potential. The programme benefits would be to gain strategic business knowledge and insight from both the workshops and mentoring. We would aim to learn how to optimise our existing business processes, identify new and existing areas for revenue growth and systemise our ongoing commercial work in order to free up resources for creative and social impact projects – which we want to become the core of our business and biggest revenue generator in future. We would also benefit from access to investor networks, peer networks and pitch events that would support the successful development of new long-term film projects.

Location Works finds locations for filming, photo-shoots and events, and we’re the longest established company of our kind in the world (1985) We were the first agency with an online location library (1995 – before google!) Working on hundreds of projects across creative sectors: www.locationworks.com/credits with 21000 clients on our database and 4300+ real world locations (many of historical significance). We’re also developing digital twin assets of real-world locations, catering to industries such as virtual production, gaming, and virtual tourism. This work started post-pandemic with Innovate-UK (2020) and aims to monetise IP and ensure fair payments.

Why we applied to Creative East

We applied to the Creative East investment readiness programme because we believe it aligns perfectly with my business’s growth objectives – we want to develop this new side of the business quickly and will require investment, expert advice and a great team to make it happen. Previous experience with a similar program (10KSB sponsored by Goldman Sachs at UCL in 2013) has shown me that having this structure and guidance is invaluable to grow the business. Being able to step away from daily activity and gain a helicopter view is key and a 12-week curriculum is conducive to this. We believe our asset library of digital twins will be quick to be revenue-generating with the essential knowledge and networking opportunities needed to attract investments and foster sustainable growth.

About

mediaSaaS was launched in 2019, a week before the first COVID lockdown! History has shown that deployment of technology in Broadcast & Media can take months or years to complete, not necessarily successfully. Our vision is to reduce this to days and weeks saving time, money and reducing risk.

A lot changed in the industry as a result of COVID and we effectively had to throw a lot away and start again. We launched a v1.0/MVP in September 2023 and, whilst aiming to deploy a number of small systems we are being pulled into significant discussions regarding much larger, multi-site systems. Whilst this is great, it presents its own set of challenges.

Why we applied to Creative East

The opportunity to join the Creative East programme was perfectly timed to help us plan and execute our next phase, (deploying real systems to real customers), and the funding to enable it.

About

Moviestorm is a developer/publisher from Cambridge, UK. We make affordable and easy to use 3d animation tools. We also provide film previs and bespoke development services based upon our IP.
Founded in 2003 by Cambridge entrepreneurs, in autumn 2005 Moviestorm received investment from a consortium of private and institutional investors in order to build the Moviestorm Filmmaker tool and community. Since release in 2008, Filmmaker has attracted over 450,000 amateur filmmakers, teachers and students, and businesses, looking for a low cost and accessible tool to tell stories, teach and create commercial films. In 2019, Moviestorm successfully delivered a EU Horizon 2020 Research and Development project called First Stage aimed at the use of natural user interfaces to intuitively provide creatives with greater control of their previsualisation process. Since then we have been productising that research and have released ‘FirstStage’ to critical acclaim, a real-time collaborative content creation platform for all types of creative productions.

Why we applied to Creative East

We are strong creative product developers, but we could be stronger in product and business promotion. We want and need to get some qualified expert guidance to help us be in a position to fully exploit the go-to-market potential our FirstStage product platform.
We also look forward to the opportunity to build our skill sets and network with other creative businesses in the area.

About

SKYLE Games is …Stephen Kyle making games! My main expertise lies in making innovative word and puzzle games. I’ve released one mobile word game (check it out on the App Store/Google Play at “lexagons”) and have another still in development. My main goal for this year is to release a 3D multiplayer party game on PC called Super Spelling Ducks. You push blocks of letters around to make words with cute little ducks while trying not to squash each other. I was also contracted by researchers at Cambridge University to make a game about the viruses & the immune system that they now showcase at the Cambridge Festival and other exhibitions. Previously I was a software engineer for a local tech company for 7 years and before that completed a Ph.D about smartphone operating systems at the University of Edinburgh.

Why we applied to Creative East

I applied for the Creative East programme because when I took this leap to go make games independently I didn’t appreciate how little of the required work would be actually making a game, realistically. I need help, and that help is most likely to come from a publisher or from government funding. I recognise that currently I look a bit like ‘mad man with a dream’ – and I’d like to learn the tricks in how to turn that into appearing as a more sustainable and investment-worthy business.

About

We are The Alt Co., an indie brand, design, art, and Webflow agency rooted in Norwich but wanting to serve the entire UK. Founded by myself, Lisa Love, I’m a fine artist, designer and musician. Over the last few years, developing the business from many iterations of providing a service, building on my knowledge and learning to reach out to others, I have finally arrived at the right balance between ND-flavoured creativity and structure to develop a design agency for the arts, culture, music and education sectors.
But…there is still so much more to do.

Why we applied to Creative East

To gain proper guidance from creative industry experts and professionals, that understand the nuances of building a business in the creative sector. From my experience, other business growth programmes are unable to provide the essential knowledge required to break through the ceiling of balancing creativity and business growth, establishing both market value and a name for our style of services and building a healthy turnover. To develop our offer and ourselves as an ND, female founded business. The network of events sounds incredible and being able to feel part of a community will help me to excel no end, as a founder and creative director.
